About

The Eminent Domain is a news, information and networking resource for New Yorkers working to influence the shape of their neighborhoods and make sure that development is an asset to their communities, not a force for displacement and destruction.

We ask the following questions about development:

  • Is it based on democratic and open processes?
  • Is there accountability for government spending and subsidies?
  • Does it create good job opportunities for people who need them?
  • Does it increase the city’s supply of affordable housing?
  • Does it fairly distribute environmental benefits and burdens?
  • Does it involve and improve the quality of life for all residents in a neighborhood?

This site is written by staff from the Pratt Center for Community Development, students from the Department of Journalism at New York University, and partners at community organizations involved in innovative efforts to shape development to build stronger and more stable neighborhoods. The Eminent Domain is made possible by a New Voices grant from J-Lab: The Institute for Interactive Journalism at the University of Maryland Philip Merrill College of Journalism.

The Eminent Domain is a forum for dialogue and information. Its content reflects the views of its contributors and commentators, not the positions of the Pratt Center for Community Development or Pratt Institute.
